In the elementary years there might be school absences piling up as you dread coaxing them to school for a feared assessment or due to unkind peers.
Your teen daughter may melt down over finding the right clothes to fit in, an upcoming presentation or feeling alone at lunch.
Family time is always on edge waiting for the lashing out that ensues after a rise in panic, stress or anxiety.
No matter what their age, you see their eyes holding back the flood of tears as they try to fight the loneliness, overwhelm or panic.
Like others, you may be questioning your parenting and feel shame because you can’t find your way around the anxiety that has a grip on your child. Remember sometimes they need guidance and support from others. Parenting was not meant to be done in isolation, you can connect them to resources they need.
It doesn’t have to feel so hard.
It can be different.
How Childhood Anxiety therapy with me works
Your child can learn to ride the wave of uncomfortable emotions and feel more calm, confidence & connection.
Psychoeducation and skill building is fundamental in my work across all ages. As a school counselor during the pandemic, I quickly learned to adapt to an online approach with students and I use those skills in my practice as a mental health counselor.
In sessions therapy participants set up their indoor hoop, show me a new skateboard trick, play the ukulele and yes, we may even build forts. They will likely ask me not to sing as I’m usually quite out of tune but bring on those corny jokes or help me create a story as we weave skills and understanding throughout our therapy activities.
In working with teens they might share paintings, poems or highlights of a recent soccer match. Some prefer to doodle and sketch while we build skills and learn to understand patterns of anxiety.
Parents are often the ones to reach out for counseling for their college age child dealing with anxiety and overwhelm. If your child is 18 or older they will need to initiate contact when they are ready to schedule and participate in therapy.

Most often consistent weekly sessions help with progress. Skills learned in therapy are just like other skills that need frequent practice & monitoring for understanding. Anxiety didn’t develop overnight & will require work to see the progress you desire. We will work together to find the right fit and adjust to meet your child’s needs.
